Detroit Red Wings News and Notes 1/18
Joey MacDonald is still recovering from a back injury that he sustained in March. "It's frustrating, especially after a year like last year when everything went so well," said MacDonald. "But it's no different than any other year for me. You come into camp and battle. If you're not No. 1, you're battling for No. 2. It doesn't matter. You just keep battling and working hard. Look at what happened last year." MacDonald started the 2011-12 campaign as Detroit's third-string goaltender, but worked his way onto the roster before suffering a back injury. He's signed with Detroit through the 2012-13 season
Mike Knuble signed a 25-game pro tryout contract with the Grand Rapids Griffins. That means he'll play for the Griffins but can sign with any NHL team that comes calling. Grand Rapids is the AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings. Knuble took part in Detroit's training camp on a tryout basis, but wasn't able to make the team's opening game roster.
Todd Bertuzzi (groin, sick) will not play in Saturday's season opener at St. Louis but the club hopes he'll be ready for the second game, Monday in Columbus. Bertuzzi left Thursday's practice due to what was originally described as a tender groin, according to Red Wings coach Mike Babcock. However, it looks like Bertuzzi has also been battling an illness all week. "He's sick, got the flu," Babcock said.
Darren Helm (back) has been placed on the injured reserve list. Helm (back) expects to miss the first three games. Jakub Kindl (groin) won't play Saturday.
Brian Lashoff was reassigned to Grand Rapids.
