The last game of the year, and last loss before the New Year took place at the Joe on December 31st. The New York Islanders stole the show, and took care of any last hopes the Wings had in Overtime. Here is the recap:

The Wings took a lead early, on Johan Franzen's goal at 11:52 played in the first period. but it didn't take long for the Islanders to fight back and tie it up, 1-1 on a power play goal by Matt Mulson. Giving the advantage back to the Islanders, who scored at 19:57 of the first period, with another goal by John Tavares. Giving the Islanders the surprising first period lead.

Most scoring, much like the first half of the first period was saved until the later part of the second period, when Islanders Jesse Joensuu scored at 15:13, giving the Islanders the 3-1 lead. But, later the Wings got a goal at 19:51 by Valtteri Filppula to make the game 3-2.

The Wings would score with 10:18 played, with a goal from Thomas Tatar, and that was his first, tying the game up late, which went to Overtime.

In Overtime, many penalties were shown, costing the Red Wings the man advantage in Overtime and giving the Islanders the man advantage where they scored with 3:57 played by PA Parenteau. The Islanders defeated the Wings for the third time in three years, and the Wings still held the West lead.
