The Red Wings currently have a commanding lead on top of the Western Conference. Now at 52 points going into the final game before the New Year vs. the New York Islanders. The Wings had another outstanding game, including their own Patrick Eaves recording his first hat trick and getting the first star with 4 points.

First period was a very slow period, on the way to a busy second and third period. At 1:36, Jiri Hudler scored to make the score 1-0 Red Wings over the Stars. That was all the scoring in the first, on way to the second period.

Second period, the Stars took full control of the first half of it, first with Brad Richards scoring a goal with 5:39 played in the second period. Not even a minute later, at 6:29 the Stars took a quick lead 2-1 with a goal by Mark Fistric, then with 6:53 played Jamie Benn scored a goal to give the Stars the 3-1 lead. But the Wings struck back in the second half of the second period, first getting a goal by Nicklas Lidstrom at the 8:56 mark. Then at 17:38, the Wings tied the game with a power play goal by Patrick Eaves. Thats where it stayed heading the the third period, still being anybodies game.

Brad Stuart took the lead for the Wings, his 3rd at 5:29. Kris Draper scored his 2nd, at 13:23 giving the Wings a 5-3 lead. It remained that score until Patrick Eaves scored his 10th of the season and 2nd of the game at 14:07, the Wings had a 6-3 lead, when the Stars decided to pull their goalie, leaving Patrick Eaves to score his 11th of the season, and 3rd of the game, getting a hat trick. It was the second time this month a Red Wings player scored a hat trick, following Nicklas Lidstroms hat trick. The Wings stand at 52 points, first in the Western Conference
